Matron Mother Deneld

Enclave and Nymryn's Mother

Enclave's memories of her:

  • Scary (Calculating), Strict, Composed, Nouveau Roturier
  • Nymryn's Memories of her:

  • Scary (Unpredictable), Heavy Moodswings, Needs Placated

  • Enclave is the eldest child of her mother, born when her mothers roughly ~120. She didn’t actually live with her mother particularly long. Her mother was someone who put her fingers in a lot of pies when she was younger, so to say, and so from a young age Enclave got very specialized training to do very specific jobs and take specific stations. She set her daughter up to have a (By drow standards) successful life.

Comparatively, the way Nymryn remembers their mother is as someone that either needed regulated or avoided. However. ☝️ Importantly, in the state she was in when she had him, she was someone that could be avoided. If he stayed quiet enough and kept himself out of sight, she didn’t go looking for him. As a result, Nymryn largely ended up raising himself up until Enclave came around and killed their mother. He was shielded from the wider cultural cycle of cruelty and punishment, only experiencing it once he was pulled out of the house he grew up in by his sister.

I wanted to give the impression that between Enclave leaving her mothers care and coming back to kill her, something… happened. There is a story that Enclave was neither close enough to her mother to know and not around enough to experience, and Nymryn is too young to discover. There’s a gap in her design that leads to her becoming this disheveled and erratic, but what that gap is will never actually be focused on or concluded.

Ultimately, Enclave and Nymryn’s mother isn’t an import character in the grand map of their lives. While she provided the framework for the direction each of their lives would go, she’s a footnote in the larger web of experiences they had to go through.

    Design thoughts:

While it doesn’t look like it at a glance, the dress she has on when she’s younger is something I consider to be far less restrictive than that of what she wears when she’s older. It has more complexities and pieces, but it isn’t going to get in the way of her movement. Likewise, she has the looser accessories like the belt of her dress, and the web-lace scarf.

Comparatively, While her older design is a lot more simple, it sits tighter to the body, and has that long train that I think would get tangled in her feet rather often. Likewise, the dress hugs the body a lot closer, save for where the rips and threadbare has given her space to breath. The only accessories she has on are bracers.

I think if she was a character that was going to be around more, I would have liked to add more detailing to both designs (Like a pattern on the belt or dress.) But I kind of wanted her design to be vague enough that you get the impression, no matter which version, that it exists in a memory. Enclave has a much clearer memory of her mother than Nymryn, but ultimately it’s still a memory.

I did pull from both Enclave and Nymryns colors with this one. Enclave has her features but Nymryn has her miku lookin’ hair. I won’t do this again with a parent-child duo, I think giving parents and children unique looks is important. But for this one case…

As a final note, something interesting that I think can be said about the specific circumstances of how their stories are set up is. Hm. Nymryn, while still being a victim of neglect and parent-ification, ended up coming out of the experience with a largely different style of trauma than most raised in the underdark. For his fundamental years, he didn’t have anyone telling him that they as a people are uniquely evil, or that they should relish in the bloodshed and death and choas of Lolth. Instead it was just the comparatively grounded trauma of him and a mother than couldn’t care for herself anymore.

I think (perhaps in a somewhat depressing turn) that he was better fed (Because he was feeding himself and his mother) and generally less harmed (Because his mother was less concerned with Hurting and more concerned with scaring him away) than he ended up being in Enclave’s care (Who understood almost immediately how ill-prepared he was to face much of lolths society, and ended up putting a lot of pressure on him right out the gate.)

  • Lar'ice was Enclave’s first born, but she was killed when Enclave went back off to spy on the Eilistraee girlies way back in the day. I have settled on this - Enclave doesn’t actually know who her father is. She know’s that she is some Eilistraee worshipers child, because despite spying on them Enclave was sleeping around up there. She might end up having her suspicions in story, but who’s child it is never really ends up being confirmed to Enclave or the audience.

She has Enclave’s last name because Enclave hadn’t formally incorporated herself into Sabdra’s house yet. She wasn’t shipped away to be tutored separately from her as young as her twins were, but Enclave was young when she had her and didn’t really know what to do with her.

Sabdra always thought Enclave was a little too gentle with her (Note: Moreso distant and uninterested in directly punishing her than actively attentive and gentle, but to drow it’s all the same), and that later gets used as justification to send the twins off earlier than she did with her daughter.

  • Rilbryn and Erthril are twins. They take Sabdra’s houses last name because for all intent and purposes, Sabdra did yoink Enclave and Beltrin’s children and place them into her house as her own. Enclave didn’t get to see either of these two grow up, as she had them until they were up and walking properly, and then they got shipped off to tutors and she didn’t actually meet them properly again until they were like. 14-15 (Of which they obviously aren’t here, lmao).

Neither Enclave or Beltrin named them either (Beltrin for obvious reasons, and honestly I don’t think Enclave named any of her kids, her mind blanked on that and Sabdra did it for her) - A lot of this was done to create a purposeful disconnect between child and parent, and it worked, because their relationship is largely one of cold, business-like respect moreso than it is anything actually personable. As far as Enclave can tell, the twins seemed to “Get along well enough,” which gave her some hope in the back of her mind that she could still turn that whole thing around and get them away from Lolth. But she’s ultimately not personable enough to do that well, and neither twin ever actually trusts her as anything more than an authority figure they know they have to obey.

They’re purposefully not given much narrative focus from Enclave’s perspective because she doesn’t end up close to them, but Nymryn gets to know them a little better than she does by proxy of being within their immediate peer group, and Lymrith get’s put in charge of keeping an eye on them for a while. They also end up keeping Sabdra’s attention a bit more than Lymrith or Nymryn do, and there’s not a lot Enclave could really do about that.

Design wise, the only notes that I have are that I wanted to play with the big drow hair styles that nobles from menzo are depicted with for Rilbryn, that the dress is meant to be one she can connect to her wrist to keep off the floor, and that the spider on her shoulder is ornamental (not real) though IS enchanted. They’re a standard Cleric/Wizard

    Myrwale

    Lymrith's Daughter

  • The concept for her design is that she’s a daughter of Lurue, one of the more bestial divine powers in the realm. I’m using “daughter” in a very loose way - I don’t know if she was directly birthed by her (I don’t know if a goddess who’s main focus is beasts of the realms is one who takes much interest in humans, but she DOES have human and demi-human followers), or something more akin to greek mythology “Athena birthed from the brain of Zues” levels of logic going on - I’ll decide down the line if she ends up being relevant in a way that matters or I end up tabling her properly, lmao.

There are a few things I want to play into with that: The first and easiest to explain being that when the heritage that manifests itself as an aasimar manifest, her magic is more coded to that of her mothers. Instead of wings and feathers, she gets a horn and tail. I think if I do eventually give her wings, they’ll be akin to that of the Pegasus - Not entirely off the table. Her powers don’t actually manifest directly until puberty, and so a lot of the physical traits that reveal her to be an aasimar don’t as well. Once they have, her hair color changes to a more silvery color (Silvery-moon-ish color, perhaps), she gets that spot on her forehead that cuts down into her skin.

While her adult design is largely concept right now, I want her grow into having a lot of trait’s I’ve labeled. “Horse.y” Unicorns are typically depicted as being the slimmer, and smaller variety of horses, but in my head I have her in the “draft horse-ect” Type of build: Sort of stocky, with her hair pulled into 5-4 seperate braids, and maybe a little bit of that goatee unicorns are typically depicted with. But ah. That’s not what she is now. Right now, in the focus of her, she’s just a strange little girl - And a lot of those design elements are purposefully meant to embody those that appeal to the strange little girl crowd. Even the picking of a horse-goddess was intentional in that regard, haha. The pastels, The oversized shirt and glasses and tangled up hair.

Secondarily, I want to play into this concept of the daughter of a unicorn - A being that even within the context of the realms is this really mysterious and romanticized being, being (as I’ve cited in the post multiple times now) this strange little girl that was raised in the woods and at a glance is very much not a very elegant little thang. These specific sketchers were largely concept art trying to get the spirit of her physical design down: If I come back to drawing her more in the future, I want to play up her clothing being a little more disheveled, torn up, and dirty. She’s both the child making potions out of mud, sticks, and leaves, but also the child who grabs a petrified rat without thinking about it and goes “ew” and then shoves it in Lymriths hand, lmao. She’s a bit bratty, a bit vulgar (verbally, that is), and a bit loud in way children aren’t supposed to be.

From an authorial standpoint, her character is very much a subversion of the innocence of youth plot, with a layer of an almost peter pan-esc role to the story. I don’t think there’s actually that much of an innocence to childhood as is culturally emphasized - Even in their imagination and their youth and their self perceived cultural freedom, Children generally tend to be more keen and aware of tragedy then people let on, more interested and curious about edgier and darker things then people accredit, and there’s almost this level of tragedy that comes with that kind of “playful” nature when left unchecked: Peter pan was a story that included a lot of elements about how the playful nature of childhood could just as quickly become cruel - and she’s a character that gets torn from that, as one of the many tragedies of youth is that you often don’t get much control over the circumstances that will do that.
